Home Birth

The first question most women ask when considering home birth is “Is it safe?” Many people incorrectly associate the drop in infant mortality rates since the 20th century with birthing in a hospital. There are actually other factors that are related to this, such as the quality birthing procedures which can be done in home birth situation. According to the World Health organization, “It has never been proven that a hospital birth is safer than a home birth for a woman who has had an uncomplicated pregnancy.” Even though many doctors are often opposed to home birth, it is due to personal feeling rather than scientific evidence.

Today in hospitals, there are many unnecessary invasive procedures that can affect the health and well-being of the mother and the child. Many Caesarians are performed in non-emergency situations (sometimes to speed up the birth process) and there is a proven link between Caesarians and post-partum depression. These procedures are not done during home birth, and through home birth, a woman can be relieved of the pressure that a hospital might place on her to give birth as quickly as possible.

For a home birth, you will need to hire a registered nurse, and it is a good idea if she has a degree in midwifery as well. If there are complications, she can spot it early and get you to a hospital. One advantage of home birth is that you can give birth underwater, an option rarely available in hospitals. The nurse should be well-informed of the various pain management techniques, and you should do research before your home birth on the best methods for a natural birth.

Your family and friends might balk at the idea of your doing a home birth. It is necessary to educate them and perhaps, to involve them in the process. You will need all the support you can get, and it is much better to try to recruit them as participants than get into a debate about the benefits of home birth.
