Home security is a major concern for millions of people. Each week, there are incidents of home invasions, robberies, rapes, and so forth. These news stories are extremely alarming, and keep many people on guard. Understandably, we all want to protect ourselves, family, and property. This is the reason why many people install home security systems. The main purpose of home security systems is to deter a potential burglar. Most home security systems include a sign and window stickers informing others that a home is protected.

Home security systems are expensive. The monthly monitoring fee does not generally pose a huge financial burden. However, homeowners must purchase the equipment for a security system. Equipment includes keypad, door sensors, window sensors, and additional accessories. Individuals with modest size homes may purchase a basic system, which includes one keypad and three door sensors. However, those living in larger homes may require additional protection. Multiple keypads and additional sensors are necessary to ensure that a large home is fully protected. In addition, some homeowners may choose to install home security cameras and security lights. When choosing a home security system, do not forget to inquire about smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

Of course, some people cannot afford home security systems or live in homes that do not allow systems, such as rentals. Yet, there are still ways to protect a home. Portable home security devices are highly effective. Detachable, battery operated door sensors can be attached to the front and back doors. When the door is closed, simply put the senor in the "on" mode. Whenever the front door opens a large alarm will buzz, thus alerting occupants to an intruder. Unlike professionally installed home security systems, portable systems cannot be activated when you are away from home, nor will they automatically phone the police department during an emergency.
